Tramadol - Ideal Prescription Pain Reliever
Michael Fox, November 12th, 2008
When you're taking a drug, you want to know that it will have the intended effects, while producing no adverse reactions and creating absolutely no dependence. That is the ideal situation and there are not many drugs that can comply with it, particularly if we're talking about opioid analgesics. Still, there are a few that come close to these requirements and provide you with the relief you need. If there is a drug that can help alleviate pain and other upsetting symptoms of psychiatric disorders, would you not be interested to find out more about it?
Tramadol is an opioid that is capable of relieving pain, pertaining to the class of drugs commonly identified as pain killers. Acting on the central nervous systems and particularly on its neurotransmitters (GABA for example, transmitting the impulses of nerves across a synapse, being implicated in the complex mechanism of pain), Tramadol appears to be the analgesic we have all been waiting for. Still, it is important to understand that just like any other drug and analgesic especially, adverse reactions can be present and they might have undesirable effects on our bodies.
What are the side effects of Tramadol? Should we be worried about their appearance? Of course but we should also try to understand that these are rare situations. They must be known in case they appear and it is very important that we call for emergency assistance immediately. Starting with common side effects for other analgesics, Tramadol could lead to intense sickness with vomiting and diaphoresis (sweating intensely and entering a state of shock). Unlike other opioid analgesics, Tramadol does not seem to have such a strong effect when it comes to causing somnolence and recent studies have been found that there is a very small risk for affecting the respiratory system.
Any medical specialist will tell you that Tramadol must not be taken with other medication, particularly antidepressants and other opioid analgesics. The potential harmful effects will increase both in severity and number of appearances, being manifested through seizures. As the recommended dosage is a maximum of 600 mgs per day for oral use and 400 for parenteral administration, it has been found that doses over 700 mgs and 300 mgs (intravenous or intramuscular administration) can cause seizures. Many studies have been made trying to determine all the harmful effects of Tramadol, medical specialists being confident that Tramadol is an effective mild analgesic.
If you are wondering if Tramadol can create dependence given the fact that it is after all an opioid analgesic (synthetic), the answer is yes. There have been many discussions on the subject and the findings were more than clear: prolonged use can lead to dependence but it is less intense than in other opioids and it can be much easier to renounce to take the drug. Clinical trials have confirmed all of the affirmation mentioned above but there have been reported cases of difficult withdrawal syndromes. These, just like the severe adverse reactions, are rare situations but they exist and must be taken in consideration. Even the label of Tramadol notifies of the potential harm or risk for dependence, similar in many ways to the one given by morphine. As for the withdrawal symptoms that have been described these include alteration of the normal psychological state, with depression symptoms and even the attempt of suicide.
If you are considering taking Tramadol, don't be scared of the information presented about adverse reactions and withdrawal symptoms. You will have to consult a medical specialist, present to him/her your medical history and let the expert decide whether you should be taking this drug or not. Always follow the dosage as prescribed by the doctor and report whenever any of the side effects is present. Don't take opioid analgesics, including Tramadol, just for fun and the intense effects they produce as it's your health you are making fun of. Remember that Tramadol can cause powerful seizures when taken in larger doses and that you cannot derive any benefit from such experiences!
